The Ancient Sea

The Ancient Sea EP, 2019

The sky is falling out into the ocean

The stars are tumbling down

One by one they start to drown

And I sit in this house Atlantis frozen

And I could cry out loud

But I've made braver vows

But not all mermaids learn to swim like you

And in nature chances are few

Chorus

And you lost your nerve in a graceful verve

No one could save you

You left your crown and your shining gown

In the ancient sea

You took me to your grave

You were barely sleeping

Dreamless as the moon

On a blameless ocean

Time after time, and the ragged will

Venus and Jupiter let the heavens spill

Chorus

Bridge

I awoke to the sound of waves

On a far off shore

On a raft made of mermaids’ tails

 And an open door

Chorus

Zoetrope

Live Video, 2020

Roses bloom in pink and white

And the petals are veined and thin

Like skin in the early springtime light

While the moon is sleeping in

After whisky and gin

After whisky and gin

I woke after a frozen sleep

My limbs were tight and sore

Oh and how I did weep

For the tales I’d see no more

But dreams aren’t made to keep

No, dreams aren’t made to keep

Chorus

And I dreamt of home and the moon and stars

And the weather and the snow

And I found a land that I forgot

Was buried far below

Like a story book that comes to life

In the flicker of a child’s eye

Time passes in a zoetrope

And I watched it all spin by

Oh I watched it all spin by

Picking at the seams of an old worn dress

Save the fabric for later

To sew something I’ll never make

But I guess it’s always safer

‘Cause you never know

When you need to fix things as they grow

When you need to fix things as they grow

Oh the snow came down on the daffodils

But the daffodils stood strong

And it buried them but three feet deep

While the winter carried on

Stubborn, sad, and strong

Like it had never gone

Chorus Repeat

Seeds

Live Video, 2020

The day you recovered was the day you felt alive

When you rose from the ash you nearly crashed but you survived

We walked in the rain under a sky that sometimes lies

And uncovered the heart that your body left behind

And all the time the leaves turned

To umber and cyanide

Throw seeds to the wind

And some of them will fly

Into the mouths of swallows,

And songbirds in the sky

And some of them will bury

Themselves too deep in the ground

Where Persephone will eat them

And Hades will confound

Her heart

And I can paint trees and I can paint birds

And sometimes I can even paint the abstract and absurd

But somehow I can’t even say the holy written words

That allow me to return to ashes and earth

And all the time the trees

Are whispering your birth

And some seeds will settle

And form a sprout and grain

And grow into the child

Of the seed that comes again

And some of them will drift

Into a cave high on a hill

And hibernate as long

As they can till summer will

Claim them again

Release them still

And watch them scatter

You can’t do much

No you can’t let it matter

Because Seasons change

Even faster

Than the sorrow can blame you

For the time you took after

Some will reach the ocean

And float to a great land

Saved from the fishes

By a kind sailor on the strand

But some of them will stick

Inside the palm in your hand

And glisten like the stars

As they grow to demand

Your heart

Build Me a Boat

The Ancient Sea EP, 2019

Build me a boat and I’ll sail to the moon

And I'll capture the sea for me and you

You take starboard and I’ll take port

And you’ll never drown in the ocean blue x2

Oh make me some wings of feather and twine

And I'll fly to the stars for me and you

But don’t use wax, and don’t use glue

Or we’ll learn a bitter fate that only Icarus knew x2

Oh plant me a tree in a meadow green

And every year it’s leaves will sprout anew

Frost will come, frost will go

But Spring shall come again and bring the morning dew x2

Oh give me a ring of silver and gold

And I'll hold your hand my whole life through

You’ll promise me, and I’ll promise you

But you’ll never know if you don’t ask me to x2

Oh dig me a grave, and make it deep

For when I finally sleep, I’ll wait for you

And we will sail just like we planned

There’ll be two more stars in the infinite blue x2

Golden Apples

Ghost Letters from the Sea, 2010

Over and under hill

You will be searching still

In meadows made of stone

Are where these seeds are sewn

Chorus

And no you’ll never know

Unless you search high and low

For golden apples grow

In places that you would never think to go

And if you find one take it home

 It’s yours and yours alone

So spin from it a golden thread

To wrap around you when you’re dead

Chorus

With your own slight of hand

Bury yourself in the sand

And wait for the rain to come

And deal with your deeds undone

Chorus

And no, you’ll never know

When it’s your time to go

But if you reap the seeds that you sew

Your golden apples will never grow

Canaan’s Land

Second Sun EP, 2012

The briar grows so tall

Now you're far away and the garden mourns

The thorns protect your form

From the wind and the rain and the ruby dawn

But when the sun goes down and the Yew tree bends and sways and breaks

Will your soul awake with a fire in your belly and a piercing ache?

Did you know your heart when you took that pen and you signed your name?

And now you will depart never knowing if you'll be back again

And now you've fixed your fate

You're bound to the fate of your pack and gun

Purgatory waits for you untamed soul in a setting sun

And no, the bells won't ring

For the common man in Canaan's Land

Your history's long gone

Like a beating heart held out in your own hands

Life will this impart when the circle makes it all around

You never know your part till your body is buried under ground

And now you've fixed your fate

You're bound to the weight of your unborn son

Willed in hope and grace still you're traveling on with your song unsung

And no, the choirs don't sing

For the common man in Canaan's Land

Your history's long gone

Like a beating heart held out in your own hands

Butterflies and Thieves

I Wish, I Wish, 2017

I once knew a boy with the face of a May morning

So bold and sweet and charming at the first, at the first

He took my hand a guided me through forests bathed in starry dew

And there we’d meet the morning with the lark

There we’d meet the morning with the lark

Oh he professed to me that I was his one true love

Such mesmerizing sweetness was his gaze, was his gaze

He took my hand and walked with me through meadows of the deepest hue,

And there he’d meet the Devil in the dark

Chorus

Butterflies and thieves are but one in the same

They’ll blind you with their beauty and then steal from you again

And then they’ll fly to freedom, leave you sorry and alone,

Touched by the devil and no one to call your own

And when the moon shone brightest against a velvet sky

It cast a terrible image on this place, on this place

For when the shadows formed they revealed to me the truth

This charming boy had pointed horns to mark

Chorus

Bridge

Never fall in love with the devil’s son

He’ll bind you and unwind you until your heart is stone

He’ll leave you cold and ruined, and unable to love

Until you meet him on your dying day

Chorus

Shropshire Lass

Ghost Letters from the Sea, 2010

Some people they go to India to find their inner peace

And others they go to Thailand and places so far from this land

But where I loved the most were the fields I grew up in

Far out between the border hills and the valleys

Where history is so old yet from father to son the same stories are told

Whilst walking the winding path across the Long Mynd

And some people turn to religion, and some people go it alone

And others they have each other to call their home

But where I find my soul is in the blades of grass

Which grow from the richest soil in the land

Where castles center towns that keep the same old market square

Where the people still congregate on occasions

And now I climb bigger mountains and the valleys are so wide

And the rivers are laced with cabins of the Gold Rush kind

And cliffs overhang lakes that are deep as they are wide

And the hawk circles round and around every morning

And where I loved the most

were the fields I grew up in

Far out between the border hills and the valleys

Where people and places and names are all intertwined

And sound like they come from the same page of the story

Ophelia

I Wish, I Wish, 2017

In the river she lies, Ophelia

While the willows and the boughs conceal her

The fish and the fallow deer do mourn her

And kiss her frozen brow to thaw the winter

The sweet and the ragged rue the heart brings

The sallow words of love on broken strings

The promises of keepsakes and kinder things

Are figments in the wind as the final bell rings

Chorus

Dive deep down as the water sings

And keep your frozen heart safe for finer things

Dive deep down into the river

When you’re bound to yourself you cannot falter

They sing of lullabies and boys in blue

But never of goodbyes or the law of two

The moth and the butterfly will both claim you

Till you’re swimming in the dark between the old and the new

Chorus

Breathe In (A Selkie’s Song)

The Ancient Sea EP, 2019

I have lived under the waves

A hundred years or more

How many lives I’ve saved

For which I’ve seen a thousand more

Sink to the ocean floor

For I was young and silvery gowned

The current clear and bright

But the frightful tides and watery graves

Writhed in the shadowy night

Till you were in my sight

Chorus

And no, there is no doubt

That you can’t breathe out

If you can’t breathe in

And no, there is no doubt

You can’t scream and shout

When you can’t breathe in

Then I walked upon the land

Trapped by human hands

Till I unearthed my secret coat

And swam back to the ocean floor

A servant maid no more

And I tried to save you

When your ship went down

But I was weak against the storm

She took you without a sound

Chorus

Bridge

Life is long and salt-crack scarred

The sea so far away

You couldn’t tame my gentle touch

Or hide my skin to make me stay

Verse 1 repeat

Chorus

The Book

Live from the Rockwood, 2015

Snow falls upon the river

Cold and clear and bright

On a crisp and frozen night

A long way from home

And this reunion is bitter sweet

You’ve seen it in your mind

In the book you seek to find

With it’s title unknown

Chorus

And your story will carry on

When you’re broken

And your words won’t weigh you down

Just because you spoke them

And your bones become the paper pages

When you release them

You’re bound by flesh and bone no more

Oh and it’s a test of courage

When you feel that mortal bite

Weighing down your perfect flight

Like you’ve leaden bones

Oh but if you can deliver

Without a fuss or a fight

With a calm and gentle might

Then you’ll make it home

Chorus

Song 13

Ghost Letters from the Sea, 2010

Do you know, when a star falls

A flower grows in its place?

And when the garden is full

The sky will be an empty place

Bridge

And somehow I know if I glitter and glow

It won’t keep me from falling

In the star signs, a bow and arrow is mine

And I will shoot before I think

If you go, then I’ll go

Find a feather and a pail of ink

But if you move like a hummingbird

I can’t stay still long enough to think

And how could you tell

That my stars were unwell

When you moved them out of place

You switched them around, so far from the ground

That the constellations changed

Chorus

And I can’t move them back

For if I do they’ll crack

And gravity has changed along the Milky Way

Bridge

And this I have learned

Is that stars are just stones all bathed in light

And the spectrum will fade, so this time we’ll say

That it just worked out all right

Chorus

Pluto’s Lament

The Ancient Sea EP, 2019

Is it something I said

That made you resent me somehow

I know that I’m cold

And fell farthest from the bough

It takes me three lifetimes

To get where you do in a year

And it’s always snowing

In in my atmosphere

But don’t take me for a stationary comet

Or satellite that fell out of orbit

Oh you decided that you couldn’t stay

And somehow you’ve changed your ways

And I know I’m a planet now

Is it something I did

To make you fear me so

I know that I live

Inhumanly far below

So far from the sun

And the warmth of it soothing touch

But even in darkness

I know what it means to love so much

But don’t take me for a lonely moon

Or a piece of a star dead too soon

Oh you decided that you couldn’t stay

And somehow you’ve changed your ways

And I know I’m a planet now

Oh spin me around and around

Don’t keep me buried under the ground

Spin me, spin me around

Oh spin me around and around

Don’t keep me buried under the ground

Spin me, spin me around

Second Sun

Second Sun EP, 2012

In this life you’ll learn a lot

Some intended, some forgot

And in this life you will learn pain

For it will come time and time again

And we’ve become just like the wolf

We hunt and prowl, and prey engulf

We hunt and howl, “Oh, flesh beware,”

Still we’re all afraid of the bear

Still we hunt and kill

Stealing from law and will

So keep me now for I am done

I’ll never find your second sun

In this life, you will know war

Nothing like what came before

And in this life you will learn love

But it won’t come from above

Under tree and root and leaf

Confined to Hades for disbelief

But you won’t burn and you won’t die

You’ll eat fruit not sanctified

And I would choose to be

Underground with burr and seed

Oh, keep me now for I am done

You’ll never find your second sun
